Compassion as a Subversive Activity or The Science of Hair Care

Compassion as a Subversive Activity: Illness, Community, and the Gospel of Mark

Author: David Urion

David Urion, a pediatric neurologist, contemplates the miraculous healings in the Gospel of Mark as subversive political acts of power that restore the wholeness of the community. The kingdom of God that is at hand is just this: the poor, the sick, the outcaste. Their integration into the community restores creation to the radical inclusiveness with which it began and that heals us all.

The Science of Hair Care

Author: Claude Bouillon

The most comprehensive source on the subject, The Science of Hair Care has been completely revised and expanded to include the most recent advances, technologies, and trends in hair and hair care science, tracking the development of hair care products, the emergence of new regulatory practices, and the latest methods in product safety and efficacy assessment. With many references and color photographs throughout, the second edition surveys dermatological and cosmetic disorders related to the hair and scalp. It describes the structural components and physical properties of human hair, devotes a chapter to the biological features of hair growth, and thoroughly reviews the safety and efficacy of hair products.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD(Stanford University Medical Center)
Description: This book lives up to its title in every way. The chemistry of hair products, coloring, styling, permanents, and straighteners are discussed in scientific detail and one can understand the clinical application of this knowledge immediately. There is definitely a science to hair care and not all products are the same. After studying this book you will be better able to make judicious recommendations to patients with hair disorders and understand what all the ingredients mean on the product label. This is a second edition; the first edition was edited by the chairman of L'Oreal who has since died.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an in-depth understanding of hair physiology and the chemicals used to enhance the appearance of hair and their attendant risks and benefits. The structural formula for chemicals used to treat hair are amply diagrammed throughout the book and chemical reactions based on chemical moiety affinities for being lipophilic or hydrpholic are discussed so one can understand the effect on the hair shaft.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists. The editors are French and English.
Features: This is a wonderful book and one of the best I have read discussing hair care from an objective, scientific view. The chapters on hair care products and evaluation of product efficacy are worth the price of the book alone. I enjoyed reading all of it. The information is invaluable, accurate and explained in such a way you won't grab for any bottle of shampoo without reading the ingredients first. The authors provide a new analytic approachto treating hair disorders and caring for hair.
Assessment: This the best book I have read on the subject to date. Every dermatologist should read it. C'EST SUPER BON.
