Sports Nutrition Energy Metabolism and Exercise or The Wounded Warrior

Sports Nutrition Energy Metabolism and Exercise

Author: Ira Wolinsky

Presenting updated information through contributions from leading industry experts, Sports Nutrition offers a comprehensive discussion of energy metabolism and exercise as they relate to sports nutrition. This book examines the body's need for energy-yielding carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins in terms of growth, development, and exercise. Two chapters provide complete details on the estimation of energy requirements for athletes, including laboratory assessments of energy expenditure as well as field assessments of physical activity. In addition, the text also considers important physiological aspects of energy metabolism such as body weight regulation and gender and age differences.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Chad M Cook, M.S.(University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Description:This is a critical review of the current scientific literature in an attempt to answer the question: How does exercise influence dietary requirements? In examining the role of macronutrients in exercise and sport, practical recommendations are given to enable objective decisions to be made in determining a healthy diet that optimizes intake to potentially enhance exercise performance.
Purpose:According to the preface, the purpose is to provide an "in-depth exploration of important topics that will be of interest to health and nutrition professionals of all walks, as well as the well informed and motivated layman." Editors Dr. Ira Wolinsky and Dr. Judy Driskell, along with an excellent field of contributing authors, have successfully put together a book that will help further the understanding of the relationship between energy-yielding macronutrients and exercise.
Audience:The book is well written, capable of serving as a basis for a sports nutrition course for junior/senior level undergraduates or graduate students in a nutrition or exercise science departments. In addition, nutritionists, trainers/coaches, exercise physiologists, and athletes will find the information valuable. A biochemistry background would be helpful but is not required to understand the material.
Features:The first of the book's three main sections offers an introduction to energy metabolism, explaining how each macronutrient is used in energy production and the corresponding role in exercise training and performance, with each chapter closing with practicalrecommendations. Chapter 4 on the utilization of proteins in energy metabolism is well written with an attention-grabbing interpretation of the scientific literature that will surely continue to spark debate among researchers in this arena. Section two presents an understanding of how energy requirements are estimated, both in the laboratory and in the field. The final section discusses physiological aspects of energy metabolism, including an attractive chapter on body weight regulation and energy needs.
Assessment:Sports nutrition has received considerable attention in recent years, calling for an increased examination of nutritional requirements to optimize exercise performance. This book is unique among others in this area, with its exceptionally comprehensive assessment of current findings from scientists in the fields of nutrition and exercise science. Presented to readers is a combination of general biochemistry mixed with exercise physiology. While not detailing specific foods or food combinations to design a personalized diet, the book provides thought-provoking insights into the relationship between nutrition and exercise and is well worth the read.

The Wounded Warrior: A Survival Guide for when You're Beat up, Burned out, or Battle Weary

Author: Steve Steve Stephens

Conquering and Victorious

Bloodied, beaten, and broken: words associated with the battlefield. Words that spell “defeat,” but actually mean strength and courage. Because in order to get the wounds, you must first enlist in the battle. This book is for every man who has boldly said to life, “I’m in,” only to come up against inevitable trials and tribulations. The death of a loved one, broken promises, unexpected health problems, a business deal gone bad. The Wounded Warrior takes into account the lasting effects of these gut-wrenching blows…as well as less-often recognized sources of pain. Licensed psychologist Dr. Steve Stephens speaks man-to-man in this powerful book that will free you to become the victor God created you to be.

Brave Men Bear Real Wounds

Beneath your armor, you may be bloodied, beaten, or broken. Where there was once courage and confidence, you now harbor heartache and pain. Life—in all its glory—has taken its toll.

But this is not the end. It is where healing starts and life begins. Dr. Steve Stephens speaks man-to-man about all kinds of wounds from the subtle burden of living with nagging regrets, to gut-wrenching blows that include:
a divorce the death of a loved one a business deal gone bad betrayal by a trusted friend wounds from family members, and other devastating trials.

More than encouragement and guidance, The Wounded Warrior is packed with pointed questions, scriptural teachings, and honest talk about practical solutions. It’s time to move forward…and live once again!

Story Behind theBook

“After speaking on The Wounded Woman , some guys asked me, ‘What about us?’ I was taken aback and asked, ‘What do you mean?’ ‘Life is hard,’ one of them said. ‘People are cruel. As guys, we get beat up, and nobody addresses our wounds. Help us deal with the pain of getting shot down.’ Over the next month, I couldn’t get this conversation out of my mind. Every day I ran into some wounded warrior: a father facing the death of his son, a husband stunned by the unfaithfulness of his wife, a brother betrayed by a brother. Finally, I recognized I had to write something to encourage us guys.”—Dr. Steve Stephens

The Alchemy of Illness or How Not to Look Fat

The Alchemy of Illness

Author: Kat Duff

Illness is a universal experience. There is no privilege that can make us immune to its touch. We are taught to assume health, illnesses being just temporary breakdowns in the well-oiled machinery of the body. But illness has its own geography, its own laws and commandments. At a time when the attention of the whole nation is focused on health care, Kat Duff inquires into the nature and function of illness itself. Duff, a counselor in private practice in Taos, New Mexico, wrote this book out of her experience with chronic fatigue syndrome, but what she has to say is applicable to every illness and every one of us.

For those who are sick, this book offers solace and recognition. For those who care for them either physically or emotionally, it offers inspiration and compassion. Finally, this fresh perspective on healing reveals how every illness is a crucible that tries our mettle, tests our limits, and provides us with an unparalleled opportunity to integrate its lessons into our lives.

Publishers Weekly

Drawing on her own experience with CFIDS (chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome), the author of this collection of eight essays explores the mystery of human pain. ``Illness is a familiar yet foreign landscape,'' she writes. ``It remains a wilderness . . . despite its continuing presence in our lives.'' Duff spent ``the better part of two years'' in bed; during her sickness she read widely and voluminously, pursuing ``the meaning and purposes of illness.'' Bringing together insights from psychology, religion and anthropology, and explicating the words of shamans and philosophers from many cultures, Duff tracks the universality of illness and the curious contradictions--the sense of freedom, for example--that emerge in its midst. Her own healing, achieved through ``tedious, tenuous and life-giving labor,'' is a model of hope. Duff is a counselor in northern New Mexico. (Mar.)

Library Journal

Library of Congress-assigned subject headings (``Sick-psychology'' and ``Chronic fatigue syndrome-psychological aspects'') suggest the gist of this book, which was written by ``a white woman of sufficient means and mystical temperament nearing forty in twentieth century America'' and unfortunately stricken with chronic Epstein-Barr virus, the yuppie flu. However, the LC listings fail to bring out the parapsychological aspects--the ``alchemy'' of the title--that are a major part of the story. Duff writes, ``For the only way I can evoke and describe this ultimately ineffable dark heart of the universe, that black hole that opens up in illness, and begin to address the question of healing that rises from its center, is through storytelling: the telling of my dreams, the stories of goddesses, my experience and those of other sick people.'' Duff proceeds to recount her dreams. A shaman tells her that she was ``a sacrifice dying so that others may live . . . we would not call you sick, but wounded.'' This reader just doesn't get it. For ``Sick-psychology,'' Arthur Frank's At the Will of the Body ( LJ 3/15/91) and Norman Cousins's Anatomy of an Illness (LJ 9/1/79) are better titles.-- James Swanton, Albert Einstein Coll. of Medicine, New York

How Not to Look Fat

Author: Danica Lo

Whether you're a size 6 or a size 16, you probably have "fat" days. And everyone has fat outfits, fat shirts, fat pants and even, on occasion, fat hair. Maybe you haven't exercised in a while, or maybe you had too much salt for dinner last night. If you've ever woken up in the morning feeling the bloat-or the fat, as the case may be-and if you've ever had the haunting feeling that your existing wardrobe isn't exactly doing wonders for your figure, this book is for you.

Divided into twenty-five short chapters under four sections (Edit Your Closet, Occasion Dressing, Beauty, and Looking Great for Dates) HOW NOT TO LOOK FAT offers cutting edge fashion tips on how to maximize your slimming potential, from banishing back fat and finding flattering gym clothes to getting the right haircut and smelling thinner (yes, there's a scientifically proven way). You'll learn tricks for looking thinner in all situations, whether you're on the beach, at a family dinner, or going out on the town. She'll help you avoid the Ultimate Evils ("the hip-fat roll"), ease your way into the gym ("The Case of the Bouncing Fat"), and have a night on the town ("The Skinny Bitch cocktail"). With tips from fashion insiders, as well as sidebars on what specific brands and items work best, HOW NOT TO LOOK FAT is the first comprehensive package on defeating fat that encourages women to enjoy their figures, not take dieting (and life) too seriously, and have fun with their wardrobes and make-up.

The Athletic Minded Traveler: Where to Work Out and Stay When Fitness Is a Priority

Author: Jim Kaes

As a first-of-its-kind U.S. travel guide for those who enjoy a good sweat and a healthy lifestyle, The Athletic-Minded Traveler takes the guesswork out of exercising on the road. Recognizing that millions of travelers factor into their hotel choice the quality of an accommodation's workout options, this book recommends the most fitness-focused hotels in three price categories and the best fitness venues such as health clubs, YMCAs, lap pools and running routes, in 78 popular U.S. travel destinations.

Because reliable and accurate information is not available online (all hotels claim to have "state of the art" fitness facilities) nor attainable by calling the hotels directly (staff is usually uninformed), the co-authors traveled the country for three months to personally tour over 1,100 hotels and fitness venues that made their first cut. The result is over 500 frank recommendations that give readers options for wonderful accommodations AND fantastic workout options. Sweat, pump iron, run, swim, 300+ thread count sheets, 24-hour room service...whatever the trip criteria, this book has it covered.

In the House of the Moon or Enchanted World of Sleep

In the House of the Moon: Reclaiming the Feminine Spirit of Healing, Vol. 0

Author: Jason Elias

In the House of the Moon interweaves traditional values with insights from ancient and contemporary thinkers. Acupuncturist and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner Jason Elias joins with Katherine Ketcham to help women access the feminine (yin) energy that has been overlooked by conventional medical science. Examining the major phases of a woman's life from puberty through menopause and into "the wisdom gathering years," Ellas and Ketcham offer gentle, natural remedies that can be used to complement conventional treatments to promote health, emotional well-being, and spiritual enrichment. In this life-affirming book, you will discover the traditional Chinese interpretations of PMS, fibroids, and menstrual irregularities; time-honored acupuncture and herbal treatments for menopausal symptoms, pregnancy problems, and postpartum care; life-enhancing exercises for older women; and many other therapies. Combining practical information with a wealth of myths, parables, and metaphors from many wisdom traditions, In the House of the Moon will help you reconnect with your own potential for healing and wholeness.

Publishers Weekly

While practicing psychotherapy in New York City, Elias became interested in the effectiveness of the mind and the body working in tandem to heal. Having already studied Gestalt therapy at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, Calif., he took off on a tour of the world to study Eastern medical traditions. His practice as reconfigured by these experiences focuses on traditional Chinese medicine, and particularly on the ``Five Transforming Powers'' of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each is described at length, with associated physical and mental types and the problems attendant to an excess or deficiency of the various humors. Elias illustrates how acupuncture, herbs, diet and, importantly, understanding underlying emotional issues can correct imbalances, release vital energy and remedy problems with menopause, osteoporosis, and PMS. This is not really for a DIY-er unless you're comfortable with self-administered acupuncture. The aim is more inspirational. Annoyingly, though, inspirational zeal sometimes obscures fact, as when a story about the Sumerian goddess Inanna's trip to the netherworld aimed at ``reclaiming the feminine spirit of healing'' neatly sidesteps a crucial player-Inanna's older sister Ereshkigal, Destroyer of Life. (Aug.)

Library Journal

Philosophy and spirituality are here blended with alternative and New Age medicine. The mix is a bit confusing and not very well organized; nevertheless, this book is at times a stimulating survey of the mind in treating and avoiding women's illness. Elias is an acupuncturist and student of non-Western healing methods developed by practitioners ranging from Chinese herbalists to Native American medicine men. With the collaboration of Ketcham, "a female guide who could take me into the soul of the female experience," he not only reports on unconventional treatments but also recounts what he regards as beneficial myths, parables, and legends relating to illness. Informative data are provided on such matters as the different affinities of Chinese medicine, and there are sensible discussions of practical approaches to a number of common female problems, including fibroids. The appendix lists material on herbs, acupuncture, and available organizational resources. Recommended for large women's health collections.-Natalie Kupferberg, Ferris State Univ., Big Rapids, Mich.

Enchanted World of Sleep

Author: Peretz Lavi

For those who have puzzled over the mysteries of sleep, this panoramic view of modern sleep research by a pioneer in the field offers enlightening answers. Interweaving facts with fascinating case histories and anecdotes, Peretz Lavie discusses all that is known about sleep, dreaming, and sleep disorders, including landmark discoveries from his own sleep laboratory.

Publishers Weekly

Unlike last year's Night by A. Alvarez, this analysis of the mechanics of sleep includes little literature or art and whatever history it contains is strictly about the people and events germane to the science of sleep. Readers will have to find their enchantment where Lavie does-in the research and facts themselves. In enthusiastic prose (even when discussing the decline of sleep research, he talks about "the golden era of earth-shaking discoveries" when "every night held the chance of a new and thrilling revelation, with researchers anxiously awaiting the morning so that they could report on the night's findings"), Lavie describes each phase of sleep, its rhythm and its disturbances; REM and dreams; sleep deprivation; jet lag; and sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Lavie is the dean of the faculty of medicine and head of the sleep laboratory at the Technion in Haifa, and his most interesting discussions are often peculiar to circumstances in Israel: the observation that Holocaust survivors who adjusted well to life in Israel were less likely to remember dreams (any dreams) than those who had not; the situational insomnia that resulted from the threat of missile attack during the Gulf war; the mystery of the Jewish narcoleptics (after extensive research, Lavie recorded only a dozen or so, 100 times fewer than expected). There are some how-to tips that seem a little out of place, and only a scientist is going to find a molded mask and an air compressor worn to correct sleep apnea "so simple as to be pure genius." But for those who want to know what happens when the ability to "know" is suspended, this is a clear and earnest introduction. (May)

Library Journal

Lavie, who received most of his professional training in the United States, is currently dean of the medical faculty and head of the Sleep Laboratory at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. In this wonderfully detailed and engrossing account, Lavie describes our historical fascination with sleep and reviews notable research in the field. Among the topics he covers are the physiological changes that occur during a normal period of sleep, sleep disorders, the purpose of dreams, and the "evolution" of the sleep cycle from birth to old age. His discussion of what a patient undergoes during a typical night in the sleep lab is especially compelling. This excellent overview of the sleep process is both authoritative and elegantly written. Highly recommended for students and for general readers in public and academic libraries.-Laurie Bartolini, Legislative Research Unit, Springfield, Ill.

Kirkus Reviews

An entertaining albeit at times rather academic discussion of what research has uncovered about the nature of sleep and sleep disorders.

Lavie, a sleep researcher and dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology, is clearly enthralled with his subject, and his enthusiasm shines through the sometimes stilted presentation. The author gives a brief history of the young field of sleep research—the first sleep recordings of brain-wave activity were conducted at Harvard in 1935, and the discovery of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, the sleep of dreaming, was not made until 1953—describes what goes on in a sleep laboratory and outlines what science has learned about biological clocks, dreams, the sleep of animals, and sleep deprivation. Memorable facts emerge: The dolphin, it seems, sleeps with half its brain awake, and humans can go without food longer than without sleep. In the second half of the book Lavie concentrates on sleep disorders and their treatment. His discussion of insomnia includes a fascinating account of research conducted in Haifa during the Gulf War, which concluded that while people were afraid to go to sleep for fear of missing the warning alarm of a Scud missile attack, once they fell asleep, they slept normally. Lavie describes the use of phototherapy, or light therapy, in the treatment of jet lag and sleep timing disorders; mechanical solutions to the problems of sleep apnea, in which the sleeper stops breathing; and the strange malady of narcolepsy, which is marked by sudden, uncontrollable attacks of daytime sleep. For parents, there are explanations of children's sleep patterns and advice on dealing with their sleep problems, and for the elderly, there are cruel truths about the fragility of sleep in old age.

An eye-opening trip through the land of sleep by a thoroughly professional guide.

Vegetarian Nutrition or Low Carb Restaurant

Vegetarian Nutrition

Author: Joan Sabat

Approximately 12 million U.S. citizens consider themselves vegetarians and 13.5 percent of all U.S. households claim to have at least one family member practicing some form of vegetarianism. Vegetarian Nutrition provides data to help explain the preventive role of vegetarian diets for many chronic diseases such as heart disease and some types of cancer. As a professional reference, this book is an invaluable resource for those interested in vegetarianism and/or public nutrition.

Booknews

Sabat<'e> (nutrition, epidemiology, preventive medicine, Loma Linda U.) selects articles that address major research on semi-vegetarians, LOV's (lacto-ovo vegetarians), vegans, macrobiotics, fruitarians. First, there are descriptions of vegetarianism, trends toward it, and the risk-to-benefit ratio of the diet. A section on chronic disease prevention addresses coronary disease, cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, neurological disorders, and longevity. A more recent and refined argument against vegetarianism is taken up in a section on the human life-cycle: the benefits or dangers of vegetarianism to children, women in the childbirth years, the elderly, and athletes. Recommendations for a healthy vegetarian diet focus on nutrients, phytochemicals, vegetarian diets for chronic disease prevention, and developing a vegetarian food guide. Finally, there is the environmental impact of meat production, vegetarian morality, the historical context of vegetarianism, and the confluence of vegetarianism with religion and spirituality. And yes, there is much discussion of Vitamin B 12, that major small thorn in most vegetarian rationales. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Diana Marta, BSN, RN (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This is a second edition of a very informative and user-friendly guide to the subject of psychiatry. It covers diagnoses, treatment options, case studies, medications and more in a way that can be readily understood by a lay person.
Purpose: The author's goal is to educate patients and their families, friends, and caregivers on issues that come up in dealing with mental illness. It avoids using medical jargon and is not at all like a textbook. The author's intent is to provide an authoritative, useful resource in a world where everyone tries to practice and give psychiatric advice; and do so in a manner that is easy to read and absorb. He has done an excellent job of accomplishing his goal.
Audience: The intended audience is lay people, particularly patients, family, friends and caregivers, but the book could be helpful to people who work with those affected by mental illness. The case studies help to illustrate the illnesses and propose ways to respond to them. The author is a university professor and clinical director of a major psychiatric hospital. He has also been recognized as an advocate for mental health by the National Alliance for the Mentally III (NAMI).
Features: The book begins by attempting to distinguish between what is normal or a mild variation in mood or behavior and what constitutes a psychiatric illness. The case studies illustrate various situations that a family member might encounter and how best to respond. It is comfortable reading, either in parts or in its entirety, and even has an inviting cover to draw the reader in. I felt like I was reading an interesting magazine article as opposed to a textbook or journal.
Assessment: I like the accessibility of this book, in its appearance, writing style, and organization. It is informative and thorough without patronizing the reader and should be recommended to families and friends of patients to enhance the support they offer. Patients especially will appreciate the respect the author shows for those who suffer from mental illness and the author's commitment to improving their lives.

Conquering Postpartum Depression or American Medical Association Complete Guide to Mens Health

Conquering Postpartum Depression: A Proven Plan for Recovery

Author: Ronald Rosenberg

Each year over 400,000 new mothers experience a range of negative emotional reactions-categorized as postpartum depression (PPD). Yet most obstetricians misunderstand and mistreat PPD, prescribing a single-therapy, simplistic approach that frequently falls short of curing the patient.Based on the authors' research and unique, highly successful treatment, Conquering Postpartum Depression outlines a groundbreaking multidisciplinary action plan for beating PPD, including a combination of talk therapy, new-parent counseling, and in many cases the safe use of antidepressant medications even while pregnant or breastfeeding. With the newest information on how genetic factors and pre-existing conditions can contribute to PPD, Conquering Postpartum Depression is the book that new mothers and even doctors reach to for authoritative and reassuring counsel.

Mothers, you have an advocate in Dr. Ronald Rosenberg.
August 4, 2003

Publishers Weekly

Written by a team of experts from diverse medical and mental health backgrounds, this warm volume explains the risks, diagnostic assessment tools and treatment methods for postpartum depression. The condition is fairly common-the "baby blues affects four out of five mothers, and other postpartum mood or anxiety disorders affect an additional 10-17 percent of mothers." And because postpartum depression often isn't widely discussed, the stories of real women who have suffered and recovered from it could be comforting to women currently experiencing it. Bulleted lists of everything from signs and symptoms to risk factors make this volume easy to read and digest. Quotes from women about how they didn't think it was acceptable to feel this way-"I remember thinking, this isn't right... I didn't want it and I can't even imagine that I might have it"-should also help reassure readers that they aren't alone. (July) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Each year, between 400,000 and 700,000 new mothers experience postpartum depression (PPD). PPD is not the "baby blues" but a more serious condition that is, in fact, the most common perinatal mood disorder and one that is too often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Obviously, there is a pressing need for material on this topic, which these two books meet admirably. In Beyond the Blues, clinical psychologist Bennett and family therapist Indman offer a compact yet surprisingly comprehensive manual on prenatal and postpartum depression. Taking a readable and practical approach, they begin with Bennett's account of her personal bout with PPD and then systematically address screening and assessment, finding a therapist, myths about nursing and bonding, and treatment. Especially interesting and helpful are suggestions for family and friends in dealing with a mother suffering from PPD (if you go to a movie, make sure it's a comedy) and tips on "what to say, what not to say." For health professionals, there are ideas about what to emphasize to patients ("I have never met a woman who, after proper treatment, did not recover"), as well as detailed diagnostic and treatment information. The antidepressant Q&A section is excellent. Conquering Postpartum Depression is written by three authors with complementary backgrounds; Rosenberg is both an obstetrician/gynecologist and a psychiatrist, Deborah Greening is a clinical psychologist, and James Windell practices family therapy. Their combined expertise results in a very complete presentation of PPD that covers risk factors, comprehensive assessment, and multidimensional treatment by a "specialized postpartum treatment team." As in Beyond the Blues, there is a fine chapter on the psychopharmacologic treatment of PPD, plus another on alternative treatments. The authors assert that their treatment recommendations, which are similar to those of Bennett and Indman, have been shown to be effective. They also stress the importance of developing a strong social support network. These books are both important contributions because of the information they provide, the primary difference being one of style. Beyond the Blues is a quick read with an easy-to-handle format; Conquering Postpartum Depression is denser, goes into the issues in somewhat more depth, and covers more ancillary topics. Both are recommended for consumer health and health sciences collections, though for individual purchase by patients Beyond the Blues is probably more appropriate.-Linda M.G. Katz, Drexel Univ. Merck Manual of Health and Aging or Essential Energy Balancing II

Merck Manual of Health and Aging: The Complete Home Guide to Healthcare and Healthy Aging For Older People and Those Who Care About Them

Author: Mark H Beers

Home reference manual for older people and those who care about them.

Publishers Weekly

This mammoth reference book begins with the premise that "[t]he need for good, unbiased health care information runs deep, whether people are seeking to become more active in caring for themselves or others." It then goes on to provide for that need, covering all aspects of health changes through the process of aging, and explaining how to prevent or manage those changes. The book is easy to navigate and cross-reference, and includes simple but useful drawings to explain such conditions as aneurysms, heart valve disorders and pressure sores (aka bedsores). The first two sections address "the fundamentals of aging" (why aging occurs, how it affects the body and how it's changing the U.S.) and "caring for self and others," including preventive care, nutrition, appropriate use of drugs and other topics. The authors then go through an in-depth discussion of medical conditions that can affect the elderly, explaining symptoms, treatment and aftercare. This chapter supplies sound information to enhance interaction with health care providers and enable continuity of care, for both patients and caregivers. The final section covers social, legal and ethical issues and includes a guide to paying for health care and a useful reference table for prescription drugs. Twenty-five inspiring essays by seniors are sprinkled throughout the text, giving this encyclopedic text a human aspect. This excellent handbook is an essential resource for mature people, their families and caregivers. (On sale May 18) Forecast: With a recognizable name and authoritative voice, this manual speaks to both older adults and those who care for them. The publisher plans a 100,000-copy first printing, consumer ads and an extensive media tour. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

As the American population ages, the demand for current, authoritative, easy-to-read information about late-life health will intensify. In anticipation, Merck, best known for its Merck Manual and Merck Manual of Geriatrics, has prepared a guide to common age-related diseases and disorders written by experts in caring for older people. Although focusing primarily on health information and specific conditions, it covers a variety of other age-related issues: communicating with healthcare providers, long-term and end-of-life care, hospitalization, sexuality, elder abuse, driving, exercise, preventive care, and more. Charts, tables, line drawings of procedures, and marginal references to related chapters accompany the text. Additional chapters discuss the aging process and the demographics of aging. Essays by older adults along with their photos personalize the aging experience. Appendixes include a short list of organizational resources and tables of generic and trade drug names. Bottom Line More comprehensive than The Johns Hopkins Medical Guide to Health After Fifty but with fewer illustrations, this easy-to-navigate manual is an essential addition to consumer health and aging collections.-Karen Bensing, Benjamin Rose Lib., Cleveland Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
