Unraveling The Mystery Of Autism And Pervasive Developmental Disorder or Fit and Fabulous after 40

Unraveling The Mystery Of Autism And Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother's Story Of Research & Recovery

Author: Karyn Seroussi

When their nineteen-month-old son, Miles, was diagnosed with autism, Karyn Seroussi, a writer, and her husband, a scientist, fought back with the only weapons at their disposal: love and research. Consulting medical papers, surfacing the Web, and networking with other parents, they traced the onset of their child's problems to an immune system breakdown that coincided with his vaccinations. As a result, his digestive system was unable to break down certain proteins, which in turn led to abnormal brain development. So Karyn and her husband got to work — Karyn implementing their program at home while her husband tested his theories at the scientific lab where he worked.

Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder is an inspiring and suspenseful chronicle of how one couple empowered themselves to challenge the medical establishment that promised no hope — and found a cure for their child.

Here are the explanations and treatments they so carefully researched and discovered, a wealth of crucial tools and hands-on information that can help other parents reverse the effects of autism and PDD, including step-by-step instructions for the removal of dairy and gluten from the diet, special recipes, and an explanation of the roles of the key players in autism research.

Publishers Weekly

What can be more devastating for parents than to learn that their child is autistic? The severely debilitating neurological disorder, which affects social and language development, can be difficult to treat. When her son was diagnosed with autism at 19 months, Seroussi, a small-business owner and wife of a research chemist, determined to do everything in her power to help her child achieve normal functioning. In addition to pursuing recommended speech and behavior modification therapies for her son, Seroussi devoted her considerable energies--often against medical advice--to researching alternative approaches. Her own experience and a growing body of scientific evidence pointed to connections between autism and diet. And though the theory has not yet been proven, Seroussi says, research now suggests that autism may be an autoimmune disorder triggered in rare cases by an infant's measles-mumps-rubella immunizations. Convinced that the inability to digest certain proteins was contributing to her son's condition and that his autism was related to his reaction to MMR vaccines, Seroussi eliminated suspect foods from his diet; he made such dramatic improvement that, by age four, he was functioning normally. Now a crusader for dietary intervention, Seroussi has written a book that will give hope to many families--though she cautions that not every autistic child responds to such treatment. She includes a FAQ section, gluten- and casein-free recipes and resources, and a list of organizations and readings. Agent, Kathi Paton. (Feb.) FYI: Seroussi is co-founder of ANDI (the Autism Network for Dietary Intervention) and co-editor of the ANDI News. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Effective treatments are available—but you are not likely to learn about these treatments from your child's doctor. You will learn about them, however, in the pages of this book.

Evidence is increasing that children with autism have defective immune function, and that an external "trigger" seems to lead to the onset of the autistic symptoms. Although the view that autism is a neuro-gut-immune disorder might seem far-fetched, I believe that Karyn Seroussi is right on target.
— (Jane M. El-Dahr, M.D., Head of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology & Rheumatology, Tulane Medical Center/Tulane Hospital for Children)

Lisa S. Lewis
Karyn Seroussi's good sense and her ability to sort out fact from fiction make her the perfect person to tell the story of autism resarch. Add to that a son who got better and a scientist husband who helped figure out why.

Lower Your Blood Pressure in 8 Weeks or I Cant Chew Cookbook

Lower Your Blood Pressure in 8 Weeks: A Revolutionary Program for a Longer, Healthier Life

Author: Stephen T Sinatra

The numbers speak for themselves. More than 50 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure—and yet despite the billions we spend on medication, the death rate from high blood pressure has risen 36 percent in the past decade. Clearly, the time has come for a radical new treatment plan. And that’s exactly what Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra delivers in this invaluable new book.

All too often people with high blood pressure get the same frustrating advice from their doctors: lose some weight, lay off the salt, and fill a bunch of prescriptions. One of the nation’s leading authorities on cardiovascular disease, Dr. Sinatra offers a different approach. Through an eight week plan that takes into account your lifestyle, medical history, and special needs, this book will dramatically lower your blood pressure while at the same time reducing or even eliminating your need for medications. Inside you will discover

• How to diagnose high blood pressure and get the help you need fast
• A meal-by-meal diet plan you can start following today
• The relationship between hypertension, cholesterol, heart disease, and stroke
• The special risk factors for women, the elderly, and African Americans
• Easy, enjoyable exercises you can make part of your daily routine
• How dietary supplements work and which ones are best for you
• Which medications to use—and which to avoid
• Finding the stress-reduction program that works for you

Clearly written, user friendly, grounded in science and common sense, and full of inspiring case histories and delicious recipes, Lower Your Blood Pressure in EightWeeks is the one book that deals with all the factors involved in hypertension. This program has worked wonders with hundreds of Dr. Sinatra’s patients. Now it will do the same for you!

Publishers Weekly

Dr. Sinatra (Heart Sense for Women and Optimum Health) offers a tightly focused program designed to reduce blood pressure in a very short time period. He first offers an overview of hypertension and its causes-primarily excessive salt intake, lack of exercise and weight gain. In his studies, Sinatra found that the American Heart Association's "heart healthy" (low fat, high carb) diet led to insulin resistance, weight gain and higher cholesterol levels. As an alternative, Sinatra devised what he calls a Pan-Asian/Modified Mediterranean diet with olive oil, fruit, vegetables along with soy and rice. The sensible diet will require people to give up many foods including hard cheese, white flour products including cereal, bread, pasta, etc. Along with these dietary changes, the program also includes medication and/or nutritional supplements, as well as exercise and stress reduction techniques. Sinatra insists, "treating your high blood pressure is not just about taking pharmaceuticals. In reality, it's a total lifestyle change and commitment." The program, while not easy to follow, is clearly explained and the book includes both meal plans and recipes. For patients willing to change their current eating and exercise patterns to lower their blood pressure, this is an excellent resource. (Jan.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Cardiologist, psychotherapist, and medical author Sinatra (Heart Sense for Women) takes a holistic approach (diet, exercise, and nutritional supplements) to lowering blood pressure without the aid of prescription drugs. With menus and recipes, his Pan-Asian/Modified Mediterranean (PAMM) diet concentrates on legumes and grains, mono-unsaturated fats, fish, vegetables, and soy products, generally fairly easy for the average reader to adopt, although his insistence on organic foods may be tougher to comply with in some areas. Exercises include yoga and light weightlifting, along with low-level aerobics. Sinatra also recommends a regime of vitamins, minerals, and supplements, citing a number of studies supporting his health claims, and makes a good case for such supplements. He warns, however, that nutriceuticals are not controlled by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and that dosage and quality can vary widely. What his book does not mention is that the author's web site sells these products, but he does not recommend any particular source. Conscientious documentation with complete end notes adds the authority that is so often lacking in this type of book. Though sometimes a bit technical for the lay reader, overall this title is a good choice for most popular health collections.-Susan B. Hagloch, Tuscarawas Cty. Yoga and the Quest for the True Self or Elder Rage or Take My Father Please How To Survive Caring For Aging Parents

Yoga and the Quest for the True Self

Author: Stephen Cop

Millions of Americans know yoga as a superb form of exercise and as a potent source of calm in our stress-filled lives. Far fewer are aware of the full promise of yoga as a 4,000-year-old practical path of liberation—a path that fits the needs of modern Western seekers with startling precision. Now Stephen Cope, a Western-trained psychotherapist who has lived and taught for more than ten years at the largest yoga center in America, offers this marvelously lively and irreverent "pilgrim's progress" for today's world. He demystifies the philosophy, psychology, and practice of yoga, and shows how it applies to our most human dilemmas: from loss, disappointment, and addiction, to the eternal conflicts around sex and relationship. And he shows us that in yoga, "liberation" does not require us to leave our everyday lives for some transcendent spiritual plane—life itself is the path. Above all, Cope shows how yoga can heal the suffering of self-estrangement that pervades our society, leading us to a new sense of purpose and to a deeper, more satisfying life in the world.

Publishers Weekly

Yoga, according to first-time author and longtime yoga teacher Cope, can cure the sense of separation that dogs many people in our culture: "a separation from the life of the body; a separation from the hidden depths of life, its mystery and interiority." Here, Cope, a psychotherapist who left a practice in Boston to live, study and ultimately teach at the Kripalu Yoga ashram in Lenox, Mass., navigates yoga for Western seekers. Drawing on his own experiences and the stories of many friends and yoga students, Cope holds up ancient yogic concepts of the self against evolving theories of modern psychotherapy. Rather than attempting a reductive comparison, Cope suggests that various ideas experienced during yoga practice can enhance the goals of Western psychotherapy. Readers familiar with Jack Korn- field's A Path with Heart or Mark Epstein's Thoughts Without a Thinker may find Cope's approach noncommittal. He tells stories of liberation and release without ever quite conceding that yoga and psychotherapy are two profoundly different worldviews. Although ineluctably drawn to yoga practice and the ashram, Cope's point of view is resolutely Western and psychotherapeutic. Still, Cope's psychotherapeutic orientation and genial win-win approach lights up a notoriously arcane subject for Western readers. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Loosely utilizing the parable of the Indian king Viveka's spiritual journey to frame his own, Cope describes his ten years of yoga practice, first as a resident and now as a senior teacher at the Kripalu Institute in the Berkshires. Inspired by a devastating breakup, Cope, a psychotherapist by training, first went to Kripalu to investigate an undefined but powerful spiritual yearning. He found a home for himself in the vibrant, complex community dedicated to yoga and personal growth. In this, his first book, he provides a Western perspective by drawing parallels between yogic philosophy and psychology and emphasizing yoga's benefits as both a therapeutic tool and a spiritual path. Cope hints that yoga is being reinvented by its widespread practice in the United States, but, unfortunately, he only begins to probe such changes when, for example, he describes the liberating reorganization of Kripalu following a scandal in 1994. Though Cope's emphasis on Kripalu's style of yoga and his New Age tone will turn some readers off, few other accessible books provide as good an overview of the spirituality of yoga. As a result, this will be in demand wherever yoga is popular.--Rebecca Miller, "Library Journal" Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Facilitated Stretching

Author: Robert E McAte

The third edition of Facilitated Stretching is now revised, reorganized, and packaged with a DVD—surpassing its popular predecessor as the best source for the latest PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching techniques.

Facilitated Stretching, Third Edition, provides a useful overview of PNF stretching—a safe and easy-to-use method that involves stretching the muscle, contracting it isometrically against resistance, then stretching it again to a new range of motion. These steps apply whether you are isolating one muscle at a time or using the spiral-diagonal patterns of PNF to stretch groups of muscles simultaneously. The third edition contains all the great features of the previous edition, plus the following:

  • A companion DVD that demonstrates live stretching techniques from the book for a clearer understanding
  • New stretching routines for a variety of popular activities including running, golf, swimming, cycling, and throwing and racket sports
  • General stretches and stretches for older participants
  • Stretching activities with added strength work using stability balls and elastic bands
  • Stretching and strengthening tips for dealing with—and even preventing—common soft-tissue injuries
  • A new test package conveniently offered online at www.HumanKinetics.com/FacilitatedStretching

The new edition has also been reorganized using a regional approach to presenting muscle group functions around specific joints. You will learn how to stretch each major muscle in the body, both individually and in groups. In addition, you will discover how to appropriately use group pattern stretches to improve flexibility and coordination and individual muscle stretches to relax tight muscles and break up adhesions within or between muscles. Instruction is provided for using the techniques on your own or with a partner.

More than 350 photographs showing the progression of stretches enrich the book while the new 60-minute DVD demonstrates the stretches and strengthening exercises in even more detail. Icons are featured throughout the text, indicating which exercises are demonstrated on the DVD. A unique binding also allows you to lay the book flat while performing the exercises without losing your place. The DVD serves as a great visual tool for improving your technique and getting the most out of your routines.

An ideal reference for fitness professionals, Facilitated Stretching, Third Edition, provides techniques to help athletes, patients, and clients improve flexibility, strength, and coordination while also treating and preventing injuries. Students in massage therapy, athletic training, and other professional training programs will discover how to use facilitated stretching in conjunction with massage and other manual therapy techniques.

With Facilitated Stretching, Third Edition, you have a cutting-edge tool packed with the latest PNF stretching techniques to help you assess current muscle function, improve range of motion, increase strength, reduce overuse injuries, and enhance performance.

The authors succeed in presenting an updated understanding of PNF stretching techniques, both active and passive, as well as how they can be incorporated into treatment regimens. Written for athletes, coaches, and sports medicine professionals, this book facilitates a greater understanding of a proper stretching session and provides nice pictorials of major stretches. The principal author is obviously an authority on this subject matter and is careful to not talk over the heads of his readers. PNF stretching is comprehensive, including its history, proper positioning, as well as different techniques. A great overview of muscle origin, insertion, and action is presented, which is critical information to achieve proper positioning of stretches. Another nice feature is the clear pictures which are quickly accessible via colored index tabs. Case studies are incorporated, as is a section on combining soft tissue work and stretching. A review of PNF literature is also given, including pros and cons. In my opinion, this book is a very helpful aid in furthering one's understanding of PNF stretching. The authors do a great job of describing proper stretching sequences with regard to positioning, verbal cueing, and timing. It also promotes independence by showing self-stretches for all major muscle groups. Since the authors do not go into depth on tissue physiology, this book is reader friendly for a wide audience.

Raymond J. Barile

This book has been written to provide a self-teaching style of the stretching technique known as PNF stretching. The author brings together the concepts of PNF stretching theory and techniques and presents them in a self-teaching style text. PNF stretching is a difficult topic to teach from a book, and the author is successful in meeting this objective. According to the author, this book is aimed at massage therapists, althletic trainers, physicians, coaches, and athletes. This projected audience may be a bit broad. In my opinion, this book is well suited for physical therapists and athletic trainers. The black-and-white photographs and illustrations present and demonstrate particular muscle groups and PNF stretching progressions that make self-instruction easy. This book could benefit from more and updated references. This handsome book would be a valued additon to the allied health practitioner's library. The author has brought PNF stretching and theory to an understandable and practical level.

Everything About Me Is Fake And Im Perfect or Secrets of Self Healing

Everything About Me Is Fake . . . And I'm Perfect

Author: Janice Dickinson

Everything About Me Is Fake is a fast, funny, name-dropping, incident-filled, sexy read about how the world's first supermodel doesn't even feel close to perfect and never did--despite appearances to the contrary. Even when Janice Dickinson was being stitched into clothing and having her boobs taped together to be a Cosmo cover girl, she heard only the words of her pedophile father, who always told her, "You'll never amount to anything. You're a loser because you're a girl."

The book explores how women spend their lives striving for the unattainable, trying to look like they walked off the pages of a magazine with Jennifer Aniston stick-straight hair bouncing in the breeze and Cover Girl smiles hiding the pain. Janice tells us what's real about beauty and what's not, and how women don't have to be slaves to the pictures they see on the glossy pages of Vogue. She discusses why we need to feel perfect, and how our pasts, our unattainable ideas of beauty (thanks to Hollywood), and male expectations all collude to make women feel like they should be working towards the next major makeover before next year's model steps up to the bed.

Yet she is also convinced that the world does need to glam up a bit, so Janice offers real tips for both men and women, drawing on the bizarre tricks of the trade that she learned while modeling all over the world. She knows what anyone can do to easily fake in order to feel and look as perfect as possible--and without spending a million dollars or living in an operating room. She offers every beauty trick in the book--not the ones you're used to reading, but real, concrete tips that will make anyone feel better in a matter of minutes.

Janice also includes more illustrative anecdotes from her personal life that she didn't include in her first book, No Lifeguard on Duty: she's the girl who prepped JFK Jr. for Caroline, who stole Trump's limo, got Bruce Willis to a good plastic surgeon, and made Warren Beatty mad because she was prettier than he was. But along with the wild tales of partying and bed-hopping, she tells us what it was like to strive for perfection, and fail. Her way to kill the pain of that failure was pills, booze, sex, and rock stars, until that lifestyle came crashing down around her. When you've spent a lifetime trying to be perfect and having it all cave in, the next question is perfectly simple: "Now what?" The answers to that question surprise even Janice, a woman who isn't easily shocked.

When a Parent Has Cancer: A Guide to Caring for Your Children

Author: Wendy S Harpham

At some point in our lives, many of us will face the crisis of an unexpected illness. For parents, the fear, anxiety and confusion resulting from a cancer diagnosis can be particularly devastating.

When A Parent Has Cancer is a book for families written from the heart of experience. A mother, physician, and cancer survivor, Dr Wendy Harpham offers clear, direct, and sympathetic advice for parents challenged with the task of raising normal, healthy children while they struggle with a potentially life–threatening disease.

Dr Harpham lays the groundwork of her book with specific plans for helping children through the upheaval of a parent's diagnosis and treatment, remission and recovery, and if necessary, confronting the possibility of death. She emphasises the importance of being honest with children about the gravity of the illness, while assuring them that their basic needs will always be met.

Included is Becky and the Worry Cup, an illustrated children's book that tells the story of a seven–year–old girl's experiences with her mother's cancer.

Journal of the American Medical Association

When a Parent Has Cancer reaffirms that life does go on. The book should help give children and their parents a context within which to deal with life after cancer and to "find the courage to face the future honestly, with love and hope."

7 Tools to Beat Addiction or 40 Days to Personal Revolution

7 Tools to Beat Addiction

Author: Stanton Peel

DO YOU WANT A LIFE WITHOUT ADDICTION?

Whether you are battling drugs, nicotine, alcohol, food, shopping, sex, or gambling, 7 Tools to Beat Addiction is a hands-on, practical guide to overcoming addiction of any kind. If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction but do not find that twelve-step or other treatment programs work for you, this book can help.

In , internationally recognized expert Dr. Stanton Peele presents a program for addiction recovery based on research and clinical study and grounded in science. His program utilizes proven methods that people actually use to overcome addiction, with or without treatment. 7 Tools to Beat Addiction offers in-depth, interactive exercises that show you how to outgrow destructive habits by putting together the building blocks for a balanced, fulfilling, responsible life. Dr. Peele’s approach is founded on the following tools:

•Values
•Motivation
•Rewards
•Resources
•Support
•Maturity
•Higher Goals

This no-nonsense guide will put you in charge of your own recovery.

Library Journal

These two books address the age-old problem of addiction. Peele, the author of such well-known works in the field as The Meaning of Addiction and Love and Addiction, offers a revolutionary concept sure to make a difference in both self-help and formal recovery programs. Peele emphasizes what he calls natural remission, which allows anyone to overcome his or her disruptive habits. He believes that the core element of an individual, not the treatment or program, is the key to success. His philosophy thus differs markedly from that of AA, which traditionally focuses on an individual's powerlessness. Peele offers the addict both help and information, presenting what he calls building blocks for living and allowing the reader to explore the significance of seven tools (values, motivation, rewards, resources, support, maturity, and higher goals) that form the heart of this book. Well written and well researched, this is sure to be an essential text in the addiction field. Highly recommended for public, academic, and specialized libraries in the health profession. In his work, addictions counselor Prin focuses on addiction to compulsive urges. A recovering "secret keeper," he begins the story of his addiction with his deep childhood animosity toward his mother. The book is interspersed with sections that Prin calls meta-views, which offer thought-provoking questions to help readers better understand a secret keeper's motivation and explore this tendency in their own lives. Told in the first person, the text includes both a table of contents and a reading list and endnotes consisting primarily of Scriptures. Mirroring much of the AA philosophy of powerlessness and the need for a higher power, Prin's work reads much like an autobiography, as readers accompany Prin on his journey to manage his secret-keeping tendencies and face his challenges and successes in finding his own spirituality. Given its narrow focus, this work is best suited to libraries that focus on Christian literature or collect broadly in various types of addictions.-Melody Ballard, Washoe Cty. Lib. The Appetite Awareness Workbook: How to Listen to Your Body and Overcome Binging,Overeating, and Obsession with Food

Author: Linda W Craighead

People with normal eating patterns eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. But people struggling with binge eating relate very differently to this most basic need, often risking depression, gastrointestinal problems, and even death because of their problems with food. This book offers an eight-week, cognitively based program to help you learn to pay attention to hunger cues, keep track of your feelings about food, and develop an eating schedule that discourages binge eating.

In a series of easy exercises, the book guides you toward taking control of eating habits. First, gradual changes help you eat only when hungry or when a mealtime is scheduled. Then, awareness exercises help you stop eating when moderately full. Finally, by using cognitive techniques to control the tendency to eat for emotional reasons and journaling exercises to stay motivated and on track, you'll learn how to retrain yourself to maintain normal and healthy eating habits for life.

This cognitively-based, eight-week program helps people who binge eat regain normal eating patterns by tracking their habits and slowly making adjustments until hunger and satisfaction-rather than out-of-control emotions-govern when and how they eat.

Toxic Fat or George Stellas Livin Low Carb

Toxic Fat: When Good Fat Turns Bad

Author: Barry Sears

Toxic Fat: When Good Fat Turns Bad, provides a revolutionary new understanding of our current obesity epidemic by showing that it can be viewed as a form of cancer to be treated using the clinically proven pathway to change the expression of your genes using food as a drug to rid your body of toxic fat.

For many of us, one of the first signs of toxic fat is the accumulation of excess body fat. In fact, obesity can be viewed as a form of "cancer" that is driven by toxic fat. However, only when this toxic fat begins to spread into the bloodstream does it begin to attack your other organs leading to early development of chronic disease. This is why some people can be overweight and be quite healthy, while others can be of normal weight and be quite sick. What ultimately determines your state of wellness is not your weight but the levels of toxic fat in your blood. This book changes forever how we look at the fat on our body and its impact on the future of health care in America.

Author: George Stella

George lost weight with Stella Style: "eating fresh foods, using low-carb ingredients to reinvent your old favorites, developing better eating habits, and, most of all -- eating food you love!" And he wasn't the only one: The entire Stella family shed more than 560 pounds.

In Livin' Low Carb, George has brought together more than 125 of the Stella family's favorite recipes. For breakfast there are Blueberry Pancakes or George's Gorgeous Macadamia Banana Muffins. For lunch or dinner try Low-Carb Pizza, Tequila Chicken Quesadillas, Spaghetti Squash Alfredo, Lasagna, Anaheim Shrimp Scampi, and Southern Fried Chicken. And don't forget soups, salads, and vegetables! You'll find recipes here for Key West Caesar Salad, Turkey Vegetable Soup, and Garlic Mock Mashed Potatoes. If it's sweets you crave, try Chocolate Pecan Brownies or New York Ricotta Cheesecake. There are also party recipes (Nutty Muddy Trail Mix, Teriyaki Sesame Tuna Skewers), tasty drink concoctions (Strawberry Milkshakes, Lemon-Lime Slushees), and a wide array of condiments and dressings (including Quick and Easy Ketchup and Thousand Island Dressing).

These recipes feature easy-to-find, low-carb ingredients that will fit any budget. More than just a cookbook, Livin' Low Carb is a practical guide to a sustainable low-carb lifestyle.

Library Journal

Chef Stella and his family lost over 550 pounds before he became the star of Food Network's Low Carb and Lovin' It. Stella considers Dr. Atkins's work to be groundbreaking but finds his diet too restricting, so he played around in the kitchen until he found recipes that inspired him to stick to a low-carbohydrate lifestyle. What came of this was a television contract showcasing those recipes and now the cookbook. Variety is the basis for Stella's cooking. He believes that you can eat almost anything you want and eat as much as you want, as long as it's low in carbohydrates. His recipes are simple and include all meals as well as condiments, spices, dressings, and beverages. Unlike many cookbooks in this area, he includes some vegetarian recipes. He is a big supporter of the low-calories sweetener Splenda and uses it in his desserts and many main courses. With 125 recipes, it is recommended where low carb is popular and Food Network cookbooks circulate. (Index not seen.)-Deborah Shippy, Moline P.L., IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Dr Shapiros Picture Perfect Weight Loss or Good Night

Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss: The Visual Program for Permanent Weight Loss

Author: Howard M Shapiro

Dr. Shapiro has been featured in the New York Times, New York Daily News, New Woman and Vogue, because he has helped hundreds of celebrity, executive, and model clients successfully lose weight. In 1998, he designed a weight-loss program the New York Police Department that was so successful, he is now creating a program for the Fire Department.

Dr. Shapiro believes that many people with weight problems are visually motivated. With this in mind, he created an innovative diet book that utilizes more than 170 full-color photographs of food equations. On each page spread, readers actually see what they are tempted to eat. Next to this is an abundance of alternative options-for the same total calories. With only a fraction of the choices from the second column, a dieter will be completely sated--and will have consumed fewer calories. Nothing is forbidden--dieters can even eat restaurant and airplane food! Without memorizing complicated lists or counting calories, Dr. Shapiro's images leave a lasting impact, allowing dieters to make intelligent food choices for a lifetime.

: Howard M. Shapiro, M.D. has had a successful holistic weight loss practice in Manhattan for more than 20 years.

Publishers Weekly

A New York-based physician specializing in weight control, Shapiro will no doubt startle many lifelong dieters and experts with his approach to eating. There are no "correct" portions and there are no bad foods. Instead, he insists that people must become aware of what they're consuming. To illustrate this principle, the book is filled with color photographs of different foods. For example, one page shows a handful of mixed nuts, potato chips and vegetable crisps: these three portions have 400 calories each, but 10 cups of popcorn has the same number of calories as the rest. A one-cup serving of Quaker Natural Cereal has 540 calories, but that same number of calories is found in 16 low-cal Fudgsicles. Shapiro uses real-life examples of people with weight problems and includes practical advice, albeit in brief chapters, on exercise and the psychological reasons why people become overweight. However, the power of this book is clearly the illustrations showing the "right" and "wrong" food choices. Shapiro walks readers through ethnic menus (Chinese, Greek, etc.), explaining which choices make the most sense healthwise. This is a smart approach to dieting from which everyone, regardless of their weight, will benefit. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

Mother Daughter Wisdom or 15 Minute Low Carb Recipes

Mother-Daughter Wisdom: Understanding the Crucial Link Between Mothers, Daughters, and Health

Author: Christiane Northrup

With such groundbreaking bestsellers as Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause, Dr. Christiane Northrup is one of today’s most trusted and visionary medical experts. Now she presents her most profound and revolutionary approach to women’s health. . . .

The mother-daughter relationship sets the stage for our state of health and well-being for our entire lives. Because our mothers are our first and most powerful female role models, our most deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves as women come from them. And our behavior in relationships—with food, with our children, with our mates, and with ourselves—is a reflection of those beliefs. Once we understand our mother-daughter bonds, we can rebuild our own health, whatever our age, and create a lasting positive legacy for the next generation.
Mother-Daughter Wisdom introduces an entirely new map of female development, exploring the “five facets of feminine power,” which range from the basics of physical self-care to the discovery of passion and purpose in life. This blueprint allows any woman—whether or not she has children—to repair the gaps in her own upbringing and create a better adult relationship with her mother. If she has her own daughter, it will help her be the mother she has always wanted to be.
Drawing on patient case histories and personal experiences, Dr. Northrup also presents findings at the cutting edge of medicine and psychology. Discover:
•How to lay the nutritional foundation to prevent eating disorders and adult diseases
•The truth about theimmunization controversy–and the true meaning of immunity
•How we can change our genetic health legacy
•Why financial literacy is essential to women’s health
•How to foster healthy sexuality and future “love maps” in our daughters
•How to balance independence with caring, and individual growth with family ties
Written with warmth, enthusiasm, and rare intelligence, Mother-Daughter Wisdom is an indispensable book destined to change lives and become essential reading for all women.
From the Hardcover edition.

Publishers Weekly

The author of the bestselling The Wisdom of Menopause and a certified ob/gyn takes a more expansive look at women's health and how the mother-daughter relationship affects it in this opinionated handbook-cum-memoir. Northrup's philosophy that "our bodies and our beliefs about them were formed in the soil of our mother's emotions, beliefs, and behaviors" may turn off some readers, while others may take issue with her comment that "some men fear either they or their wives are inferior if they cannot have a son." These theories aren't backed up as much by scientific evidence (although in the latter example, Northrup does cite a 1975 study) as by anecdotes from her life as a mother of two daughters and her experiences with her patients. The book's opening section ("the Foundation of Mother-Daughter Health," i.e., pregnancy) mixes obvious health tips (e.g., don't drink alcohol while pregnant) with more informative ones (e.g., take prenatal vitamins such as beta carotene and folic acid). Northrup seems more comfortable when she moves on to discussing how a mother can most effectively take care of her daughter's emotional and physical health from the ages of three months to 21 years old, and her best and most heartfelt advice is on dealing with teenage daughters. She suggests moms not become their daughters' social directors, and that they hold daughters accountable. Nuggets like these are certainly valuable; it's unfortunate that they're buried in such a massive and uneven outlay of information. Agent, Ned Leavitt. (Mar.) Forecast: TV tie-ins could help this sell well; the book's publication is timed to coincide with a PBS special of the same name, and Northrup has appeared on Oprah. Library Journal

Obstetrician and best-selling author Northrup (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom) here offers parenting advice and some useful information on holistic medicine. Much of her guidance applies to all parents and children, but her insistence on women's innate "Mother Bear" wisdom and other such concepts becomes distracting. Readers who approach this thick book with a critical eye may find it taxing to sort the worthy from the extraneous passages. While Northrup is wise to question one-size-fits-all medical orthodoxy-as when she points out the dangers of unnecessary caesarian sections and the advantages of avoiding painkillers during labor-some of her advice is problematic. For instance, she opposes vaccinations for children and gives tips on getting waivers from vaccination requirements, but she does not provide sufficient evidence that vaccinations cause children more harm than benefit. In presenting her medical and psychological theories as if these beliefs carried the weight of proven medical practices, she does her readers a disservice. Recommended only for public libraries with comprehensive alternative medicine collections, though Northrup's program Mother-Daughter Wisdom (airing March 5 on PBS) may increase demand.-Susan E.
